Biocatalysis Process Scale-up
Biocatalysis process scale-up by Computational Fluid Dynamic modelling and small-scale validation
Krist Gernaey of Denmark Technical University, presented cases of industrial scale-up of enzymatic catalysis and fermentation processes by using computational fluid dynamic modelling. He presented his work at the Process Intensification Netherlands, (PINNL), meeting at Croda, 22 November 2017. The modelling is applied for the commercial scale reactor and for the down-scaled experimental test units. The modelling has three advantages.
- The commercial scale reactor design configuration is optimised, and thereby smaller.
- The experimental down-scaled test unit effort is reduced compared to the empirical scale/up method applying a series of test units with increasing size.
- The model supported scale-up is more reliable than the purely empirical scale-up method.
