Moving away from Fossil Fuels
I went to the Dutch Royal Engineering Society (KIVI) Symposium at The Hague University of Applied Sciences on May 1. This is my highlight of the symposium:
Solar panels at sea
Allard van Hoeken, CEO of Oceans of Energy, presented one of his products, Solar panels at sea in combination with off-shore windmill parks. He showed that all electricity needed for the Netherlands can be produced by these off-shore combinations in the North Sea. The North Sea is very shallow (40-50 m deep) so is very suitable for off-shore windmills on platforms. However, for deep seas also solutions based on floating platforms are being developed.
Jeroen van der Veer, former CEO of Shell, stated that electricity generation by off-shore windmill parks is a technology that suits oil companies, as the technology and their operation for a large part is the same as for off-shore oil production.
